Membership / library card
A library card is issued in exchange for payment of a membership fee and proper identification with a photograph. You cannot borrow library materials without a valid card.
You can use the librarycard in all branches of the Public Library of Utrecht, and also in the public libraries in the province of Utrecht.
The card is valid for 12 months. You must renew your card on time. You will receive a bill 6 weeks before your membership expires.
You have to give us written notice if you want to end your membership (4 weeks before your membership expires), or if your address has changed.

Materials to be borrowed
You can take out a maximum of 10 items. A fee is charged for each overdue item. You can renew the materials on this website or by calling 030 - 286 1900.
Materials that the library does have in its collection, but which are not immediately
available can be reserved. Materials that the library does not have in its collection can be requested from another branch. Reservation fees must be paid in advance.

Liability
You must pay a fee for lost or damaged items. Examine the materials you plan to borrow for damage, and report any damage you may discover at the lending desk. Three weeks after the lending period expires, you will receive your first notice requesting that you return the borrowed items. If you fail to respond within fourteen days after receiving three notices, a collection agency will be called in to collect payment for items belonging to the library, fines, handling and collection fees.

Compensation for missing items
You must contact the library within 3 months after the lending period expires. You will be charged an amount equal to the actual replacement cost plus any outstanding fines. If you fail to respond to notices stating that the lending period has expired, you will receive a bill 3 months after the return date in which higher charges are demanded. If we do not receive notice from you within 14 days, (legal) action will be taken in order to collect the stated amounts. The expenses of collection are to be borne by you.

Note: All memberships are subject to a limit of 10 items checked out at once. You may renew items a maximum of two times (unless they are on hold). A renewal is treated like a newly checked out item.

Loan periods, fees and fines

^*  7 days a week. Maximum overdue fine per item: € 5.00. If fines total € 10.00, your library card will be blocked.

Registration fee
The registration fee for all borrowers is € 2.50. If your membership is expired for more than two months, you will have to pay a new registration fee. If your card is lost or stolen, you can buy a replacement card; this costs € 3.50. Don't forget to report this loss to us, so that we can block your original card.
